The large open fields of Hillcrest Park attract a variety of sports enthusiasts. The treed slopes of Queen Elizabeth Park, city skyline and the North Shore mountains rise in the distance, while a wonderful walking and jogging trail winds around the park among small groves of trees.
This site was dedicated for park purposes by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) at the same time as Vancouver City Hall was built at its present location on what was formerly known as Strathcona Park.
The Hillcrest recreation and community complex, currently under construction in the park, includes the Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre. The Centre is the official competition venue for curling and wheelchair curling during the 2010 Winter Games. After the Games the complex will be retrofitted and construction will continue on the community centre, indoor and outdoor aquatic centre, ice rink, curling club, library branch, fitness centre and preschool. It is scheduled to open in 2011.
